Homemade Frozen Fruit Smoothies

If there is one treat my family asks for over and over that I don’t mind indulging them in, it is frozen fruit smoothies. You can quickly make then and they are pretty healthy as well. You can make these healthy drinks that will cool you down with all sorts of fruit and you can also mix different fruit. Here’s how to make your very own frozen fruit smoothie. I promise this will be fast and easy.

Here’s What You Need:

First, let us talk about the hardware. You are going to need a blender. Almost any type of blender with a tight fitting lid will do. I enjoy making each family member their favorite smoothie with my magic bullet, a small blender that blends them one smoothie at a time. Of course regular blenders work just as well, plus you can make more servings at a time.

Our first ingredient will be of course frozen fruit. You can make frozen smoothies with just about any type of fruit and of course also combinations of fruit. Some simple ones to start with are strawberries, bananas and peaches.

Yogurt makes another great addition to just about any smoothie. It makes the finished smoothie creamier and gives it some good flavor. You can use any type of yogurt. I usually stick to low-fat versions to keep the calories in check. You can also use Greek yogurt which is thicker and has more protein per serving.

You will also need liquid of some sort to thin things down. Options are water, milk or various fruit juices. Add just enough liquid to get the smoothie to the consistency you like. A good rule of thumb is to start with 1 part yogurt, 1 part juice or milk and 2 parts of frozen fruit. Here’s an example: Blend two cups frozen strawberries with one cup each of vanilla yogurt and orange juice.

As I mentioned above you can adjust the consistency of your smoothie by adding more or less of the liquid. You can also blend in some ice as well to make it more frozen and lighter

Let’s Start Blending :

Let’s talk about blending. Start by blending the fruit and yogurt a litlte, then add your liquid and blend away. Pulsing seems to work best since it gives the larger fruit chunks a chance to sink back down in between blends. This will make sure everything gets pureed and blended nicely resulting in a yummy smoothie.

Should your blender get to the point where it is having a hard time moving everything around, your smoothie is too thick. Add some more liquid and it will work just fine.

If you are planning on using a good bit of ice in your smoothie, start by chopping it in your blender first before you add any of the fruit or yogurt. This will make sure everything combines well and that you don’t end up with big ice chunks.

I tend to make most of my frozen fruit smoothies with only frozen fruit, but you can also use a combination of fresh and frozen. You can purchase the frozen fruit at the store, or freeze your own when it is in season. It is very easy to freezer berries for example. Just put them in a freezer bag and freeze them whole.

Most of my frozen fruit smoothies contain frozen banana slices. Whenever you find yourself with a banana that’s getting a little too ripe, peel it, and then slice it. Put them into a freezer bag and freeze until you need them for a smoothie. Adding them gives your smoothie a nice creamy texture and adds some sweetness as well.
